This species is one of more than 800 species of wild yam. They are climbers with heart-shaped leaves, small white flowers and tuberous rhizomes. Diosgenin is extracted from the rhizome; this compound is a useful starting material in the semi-synthesis of steroidal hormones and oral contraceptives.
Dioscorea deltoidea is native to India and was once common in the foothills of the Himalayas. However, it has been over exploited in the wild, but it is now cultivated in other parts of India, especially for diosgenin production.
