This is one of those projects in mind long time ago wich finally sees the light. But at last, my beloved Pirate is done.
I really love pirate´s stories since I was a kid. Reading a lot about that piece of history, I learned that sometimes is more interesting the real version than the romantic side of it.
In this case, my inspiration waved between the fictional character Sophia of A Plage Tale Requiem, (and her absolutely amazing dismissed concept arts) and the impressive Grace O’Malley (a fiery red headed Irish woman born in Ireland in 1530) who was known as a pirate and a trader that even got to meet Queen Elizabeth I.
Of course, Mary Reed, Anne Bonny, Elaine Marley and Felicia Moreno were also very important for the creative process <3

Originally a much simpler asset, I began creating this model in Blender as a simple exercise before deciding to take the project further by improving the geometry, texturing and overall design of the asset. This included adding barbwire which initially was easy to make, but became extremely tedious when implementing changes and so I created a custom generator tool to improve iteration time and with considerably more accuracy. This was then baked in Marmoset and later textured in Substance Painter, using two materials with 4K texture sheet (using overlapping UVs to maximise quality) and a non-destructive workflow for fast iteration, then finally rendered in Marmoset Toolbag 3. This time I wanted to make something from an actual concept instead of a real object.
I took a lot of inspiration from the modeling and texturing techniques of games like Fortnite, Overwatch and other stylized game.
I’d say stylized is not my strength, but I wanted to try it!
I also managed to rig it and try animating for the first time to give it some spice!
I’m very happy with how it came out at the end, knowing I can constantly improve on essential aspects such as texturing and modeling.
I want to take the time to thank Leonardo Raponi, Claudio Tumiati, Andrea Orioli, Ilaria Troullier, Alberto Casu, Marco Vergantini and everyone in the “TheScostumati” Discord server who have helped me with various aspects during the making of this project such as modeling, texturing, rigging and animation.
