Alūksne Castle (Latvian: Marienburgas pils, Alūksnes pils; Swedish: Marienburg; German: Marienburg) is a castle of Teutonic Knights in current Alūksne, North-Eastern Latvia. The castle was built in 1342 on the largest of the islands in the Lake Alūksne and called Marienburg. The first castle was constructed by the Landmeister Burkhard von Dreileben. It was part of a major reinforcement of the Eastern border of Livonia. The strength of the castle was repeatedly proven by repelling a number of attacks in the 16th century. After the fall of the Old Livonia, the castle remained habitable. It was finally destroyed in 1702 in the Great Northern War by its Swedish garrison to avoid falling in the hands of Russians. The ruins remained largely untouched. Today, it houses an open-air scene and forms a part of a recreational area of the Pils (Castle) Island. Moszna Castle is a beautiful example of eclectic architecture located in the small village of Moszna in southwestern Poland. It was built in the 18th century, although traces of older cellars have been discovered in the gardens. The central part of the castle is an old Baroque palace, which was partially destroyed by fire in 1896 and reconstructed in the same year by Franz Hubert von Tiele-Winckler. The height of the castle and the numerous turrets and spires give the impression of verticalism, and the whole castle contains exactly ninety-nine turrets. In Kameoka city near Kyoto the castle is not there anymore but the walls remains. In fact they have been rebuilt to restore some of the former beauty of this location. I captured 3 walls sections, the interesting thing here is the technique used to build the wall. Instead of well joined and polished stones here huge rocks are pilled up and smaller rocks fill the space between. It was suposedly designed to allow to hear soldiers cllimbing the wall as they would eventally let a small rock fall.
