Olavskirken i Bamble, også kalt Skeidis kirke ble oppført på 1100-tallet. Den er viet til St. Olav med innvielsesdag 4. oktober. Kirken var trolig en hovedkirke i Grenland. Den var den største av de kjente steinkirkene. Erstattet av ny kirke 1845.
Nesten samtlige steinkirker i Telemark ble oppført på 1100-tallet og flere kan dateres til 1180-årene. Akkurat som middelalderkirkene ellers i landet, ble kirkene i Telemark oppført i en periode vi kaller borgerkrigstiden (1130–1240). Kirkene er også ganske like. Many people are familiar with the art installationin in the Helix Park, adjacent to the Falkirk Wheel - the large Kelpies - at 30 metres high, they are the world’s largest equine sculptures, created by Andy Scott in 2013.
What is less well known is that a mini version of these iconic sculptures, the pre production “maquettes”, some 10 feet high are currently in residence in Ardrishaig at the western end of the Crinnan Canal at the Ardrishaig waterway’s centre. They have been sited there at since 2019 having cantered down from their earlier site in Edinburgh.

The principal motif is a tonsured abbot standing dressed in a cowl; his halo indicates that he is a saint, standing with his abbot’s staff in his left hand and a buring torch as his emblem in his right. The staff, baculus was carried as the symbol of the pastoral duty.
There has been some despute to the identification to the person on the bench end, some say he cannot be identified while others have suggested the abbot to be St. Brendan, as his emblem in german documents is a burning torch, and St. brendan can be related back to Kirkjubø.
In the rounded top panel sits St. Olav enthroned. with a halo, crown, his long handed axe in his right and and the earth/orb in his left.
The small escutcheon above where the olique desk top would have been is the faroes coat of arms of the ram.
In the rounded upper top panel we find Erik of Pomerania’s Nordic Coat of Arms, the three crowns.

This carved bench end was incorporated into the benches standing in the “Parish Church” until 1874. It was then sent with th remaining decorated bench ends to the Museum of Nordic Antiquities, the presnt National Museum of Denmark. This presumably late medieval, bench end was in the furniture of the “Parish Church” in a secondary role. It seems likely that it was originally made as part of the furniture in one of the churchesin the episcopal centre.
