This project feels like the reimaging of two separate projects I’ve done in the past. Mountain top castle, and lighthouse island. Both projects that at the time I was pleased with, but looking back on I felt weren’t my best.
I liked their premises a lot so I went ahead and merged the two together. Thus Castle Island was born!
Now for this scene, I did something I don’t often do when It comes to modelling scenes. I purchased pre-existing work. I know! Crazy, but I was having a strange amount of trouble modelling grass, I couldn’t get anything that looked “grass” you know?
I found an awesome little collection pack of low poly natural and organic models. Something I do tend to struggle with making so I was in awe that I found something that fit my style and could be a great leg up in terms of things I struggle with. Definitely going to see if I can leverage these assets in the future. Made this floating island with a lighthouse in 5 days trying to be done by the end of the week. And I gotta say, this was a marathon. Were a lot of troubles with baking, making fine details. If I had more time I would probably did separate bakes, but not this time. So, about the model: it’s a handpainted lowpoly with baked map from a highpoly. Triangles count: 27,5K. I was going with anime style (Miyazaki movies) and for reference I used artworks of Jim Shore (“Benatrex - Shorelights”), you’ll notice the lighthouse that I recreated.
