I uploaded the sword alone previously and planned to upload its sheath separately, but eventually decided put them together so it can have a complete showcase as a set. Both high res model and all the details made in Zbrush, painted the texture in substance painter. The animal on the sheath at first was just flat shapes with no details on it, and I thought I finished the model. Later on I looked at it again and again, eventually decided I should add more details and to make the animal figures more alive and to give them more characters, since this was a sword made for Paraoh’s battles, it just has to have that spirit. Painting the texture was another challenge since there are just so many details on the original antique. Made this piece with a heart of awe, and it was a great learning experience!

Two Komainu #3 (Guardian Lions) from Shinto Shrine
A pair of stone lion-dogs often flank the sandō near the entrance to the shrine or the haiden. These komainu, as the statues are known, are guardian figures believed to protect the space around the kami from evil.
The ultimate origins of these lionlike figures probably extend back to ancient India or even Egypt, but the more immediate source would appear to be Chinese. Guardian lions and other divine beasts were probably imported from Tang China, along with Buddhism, via the Korean Peninsula, accounting for their alternate name, kōrai-inu, or Korean dogs.
Most komainu closely resemble the so-called Chinese lion-dog. Typically, one of the creatures is depicted with its mouth open and the other with its mouth closed. Made this floating island with a lighthouse in 5 days trying to be done by the end of the week. And I gotta say, this was a marathon. Were a lot of troubles with baking, making fine details. If I had more time I would probably did separate bakes, but not this time. So, about the model: it’s a handpainted lowpoly with baked map from a highpoly. Triangles count: 27,5K. I was going with anime style (Miyazaki movies) and for reference I used artworks of Jim Shore (“Benatrex - Shorelights”), you’ll notice the lighthouse that I recreated.
