This statue was commissioned by the French government after the defeat of the country in the 1870 Franco-Prussian War. It is the only public commission of the state from 1870 to 1914, called the Golden Age of statuary in Paris, the other statues were funded by private subscriptions. The sculptor took as his model Aimée Girod (1856–1937), a young woman from Domrémy, Joan of Arc's village in Lorraine. The monument was classified as a historic monument on March 31, 1992. This statue of Louis XIV was made by François-Frédéric Lemot. It is accompanied, at his feet, by two allegorical statues of the Saône and the Rhône, created by the brothers Nicolas and Guillaume Costou in 1720.
The first statue was created in 1713 and destroyed during the French Revolution, in 1793, to make cannon.
In 1825, the current statue, sculpted in Paris by François-Frédéric Lemot, was installed in the square.

After the First World War, the activities of the Association for the Construction of Jan Žižka’s Monument in Žižkov were renewed. As early as June 1920 the cornerstone was laid in the presence of President T. G. Masaryk.
The monument was eventually commissioned in 1931 from sculptor Bohumil Kafka, a professor at Prague’s Academy of Visual Arts, outside the tender. The sculpture was intended to be monumental and realistic. It took Kafka ten years to complete the sculpture, and an advisory board of nine people was established to supervise his work, consisting of specialists, historians and hippologists. For this job, Bohumil Kafka had a new studio built in Ořechovka, Prague, 27m high and 18m wide.
