This statue was commissioned by the French government after the defeat of the country in the 1870 Franco-Prussian War. It is the only public commission of the state from 1870 to 1914, called the Golden Age of statuary in Paris, the other statues were funded by private subscriptions.
The sculptor took as his model Aimée Girod (1856–1937), a young woman from Domrémy, Joan of Arc’s village in Lorraine. The monument was classified as a historic monument on March 31, 1992.

Thhe model1907/10 (here, the 1913 Landsturm cut) represented the main tunic of a german foot soldier’s unifrom at the start of the first world war (1914). This version is specific to the Mannschaften, Other Ranks, of the Prussian Army (Buttons and Buckle, red piping everywhere with Brandenburg cuffs). The tunic went trhough considerable changes due to the war, removing decorative elements, making it cheaper to produce. A M15 blouse was introduced in 1915 with a simpler design, no visible buttons and no pipping.

The Brandenburger Tor or Brandenburg Gate is one of the best known monuments of Germany. Dominating Pariser Platz (Parisian Square) in Berlin, this Neoclassical gateway is a symbol of Germany’s evolving history, from the emergence of the Prussian Empire as a European power to the country’s split in WWII and its later reunification.
Today, Brandenburg Gate continues to represent German national pride, but also acts as a global symbol of peace. In preparation for the 25th anniversary of reunification, CyArk partnered with Iron Mountain, and the University of Stuttgart’s Institution of Photogrammetry, to digitally scan the Gate and its surroundings.
