The Hryvnia or Grivna (depending on the region and dialect) were a type currency as well as a measure of weight used in Kievan Rus’ and other East Slavic countries from the 10th century up to the later middle ages. The Hryvni/Grivnas were mostly made out of roughly cast silver and some times gold. What makes them rather interesting when compared to many other currencies of the period was their unusual shape, instead of being shaped like more common coins the Hryvni/Grivnas wold be commonly be found in three different forms from so-called “Triangular Novgorod Hryvni/Grivnas” which were long and thin, with a triangular spine. The round Hryvni/Grivnas were in the other hand more round than triangular but still long and thin. Independence Monument is a victory column located on Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) in Kyiv and is commemorated to the Independence of Ukraine.[1]
Stylistically it presents a mix of Ukrainian Baroque and Empire style. The monument was built in a compositional center of the square to the 10th Anniversary of the independence of Ukraine in 2001. The monument itself is a column with a figurine of a woman (Berehynia) with guelder-rose branch in her arms. The height of the monument is 61 m (200 ft).[2]
As a model of the Berehynia statue, the author Anatoliy Kushch chose his daughter, American artist Christina Katrakis. The statue is made of a cast bronze and weighs about 20 tons.
The column is faced with white Italian marble that stands on a pedestal in the form of a Christian temple of Ukrainian Baroque.

I snapped a bunch of photos of the giant rotating globe fashioned for NASA now displayed at EROS Data Center to make this map. The globe was commissioned by NASA to help familiarize early astronauts with what they would see from orbit. The globe is rotating slowly but it was still tricky trying to capture enough of the surface for Europe to be sure I’d be able to generate a relief map.
