Whhooaa new support for refraction! I had some concept art sitting around of a plant fairy trapped in its eternal home of amber (a simplecg monthly challenge from a while back), and never got around to modeling it. Found the perfect excuse for it this time and cranked it out. I'm so happy with the results. :') For more process screenshots, visit the Artstation page. The Baroness’ antechamber and bedroom, are both decorated and furnished in Gustavian style with some details of an older character Rococo style. So e.g. are the door tops from the middle of the 18th century, and the armchairs in the antechamber as well as the gilded console table between the windows are characterized by Rococo line play. The antechamber table is signed by Lars Nordin and the hammer piano by Pehr Lindholm, both in Stockholm.
In the bedchamber, the main object is a pull-out bed with curtains of printed linen fabric (reprint after original in Stockholm Castle). The bed is painted in a reddish-brown color, which apparently wants to give the illusion of mahogany. On the cloth-covered dressing table, which is a reconstruction with the guidance of contemporary, cans and bottles of paintings typical of the time, stand in front of a simple mirror from 1794.

This building was a solitary cell/torture chamber in Mweru detention camp in Nyeri, Kenya. ‘Hardcore’ detainees would be kept here in solitary confinement seperated from the rest of detainees for extended periods of time. Here they would be tortured, beaten and denied essentials such as food and water. After independece, the camp was later converted to a secondary school and goes by the name Mweru High School today.
The building shown in this 3D reconstruction still stands within the school grounds today and is used as a store. A sign attached to the building reads, ” Mau Mau Torture Room, they hated the injustice, they took the oath and went to the forest. They were detained, harassed and tortured, they died for our FREEDOM”

Messing around with refractive materials!
The Mosquito scan (415k tris) is from Geoffrey Marchal.
Modeling:
The scan was first remeshed with mmgs and baked to a lighter version (11k tris).
The amber fragment was roughly sculpted in blender (“I have no clue what I’m doing” style), keeping the main face flat (clay strips + flatten brushes).
The small fragments inside the amber were done by splitting all the main fragment edges and applying the “shrink/fatten” tool, followed by a random Displace modifier. Exterior fragments were then removed with a boolean modifier.
Material:
The important parts are the roughness and normal maps, which are a mix of PBR textures (rougher edges, smoother main face), while the refractivity is just a product of tweaking Sketchfab settings: opacity set to refractive and using the object’s roughness.
