First time properly using Substance Painter - Croix De Guerre 1939, given to brave souls who fought along side the allies during WW2.
Some areas aren’t as accurate as I’d like them to be due to having to work around an issue in photoshop (had to mess about with the UV a little, so there’s a tiny bit of weirdness). That said, this has been an important breakthrough in my workflow and I’ve finally entered the realm of PBR.
Whilst I do own (and quite like) Quixel, its shortcomings are mostly performance based, whereas Substance does very well in this case. The thing with Substance is pinpoint accuracy is at a loss along with important things like proper brush scaling on both U and V. I’ve yet to check out the latest version of Substance though. The men-yoroi, which covered all or part of the face, provided a way to secure the top-heavy kabuto (helmet). The Shinobi-no-o (chin cord) of the kabuto would be tied under the chin. Small hooks called ori-kugi or posts called odome located on various places would help secure the chin cord. The men-yoroi was constructed from iron, leather, or a combination of both. It had a lacquered or rusted type of finish and included a variety of facial details, such as a moustache, fierce teeth and a detachable nose. With the exception of the happuri, a men-yoroi had a small hole underneath the chin for sweat drainage.

This is a complete guide on how we created this stylized viking asset. We used a mix of Blender, Zbrush, and Topogun for the modeling section. The model was then textured in Substance painter and finally rendered in Blender 3 with the help of the compositor.
