Not sure if this is animated or static, I was trying to go for a “looping Idle” sort of motion so you can really soak in the feeling of screaming across the desert in a podracer, rather than a specific segment of the story.
One major focus was getting this optimized to work on mobile VR, and I think I’ve done that reasonably well. A ship from the ’90s Expanded Universe, the I7 Howlrunner was a small starfighter developed by Incom Corporation (the same manufacturers as the X-wing) for the Empire. Probably best-known from the Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels, I stayed pretty faithful to the design, but made a couple of angles slightly more exciting and a little less boxy.
Out-of-universe, the ship’s design is probably an homage to the Buck Rogers Thunderfighter, concepted by Ralph McQuarrie, who also worked on Star Wars’ fighters. I wanted to make sure my version felt Star Wars-y enough, so I textured it in an extremely similar to the style of the OT X-wings. I hope you enjoy this slightly obscure ship model! Vasa was a Swedish warship that capsized and sank off Beckholmen in Stockholm’s inlet on its maiden voyage, August 10, 1628. After some early unsuccessful attempts to rescue her in the 17th century, Vaasa was largely forgotten.
The ship’s approximate position remained known until the middle of the 19th century, but no serious attempts were made to salvage it. In 1956, the amateur researcher and engineer Anders Franzén, together with the diver Per Edvin Fälting, succeeded in re-establishing Vaasa’s exact position and after several years of marine archeological excavations and preparations, Vasa was lifted above the water surface on April 24, 1961.
Since 1990 the ship is included in a permanent exhibition in Stockholm. Until 1988, the wreck was stored in Wasavarvet, a temporary building that, in addition to being a combined conservation room, was allowed to function as a temporary museum. This is work in progress. Very happy with this one- a low poly pbr model of an A-wing, somewhere in between the Star Wars: Rebels and Return of the Jedi versions, complete with a low detail cockpit interior and pilot, and some of my best textures yet. The overall proportions and colorscheme are inspired by Rebels, but the engine tips, split nose and laser cannons are more like RotJ– really this design could go anywhere in the post-Clone Wars timeline.
The glass material uses the same textures as the hull, so if you had a huge fleet and wanted to improve performance, you can apply the hull material to the whole thing to have opaque black shiny glass, and then you could delete the pilot too to save on his material. On the other hand, if you want to get fancier and add some refraction to the glass, the glass pieces are their own separate elements, so it is easy to select them and add a little bit of thickness with a shell/solidify modifier in your 3D software of choice. Some lights in the engines will also make it look fancier.
