The presented item is a refracting telescope on a tall equatorial mount tripod. The tube is made of wood, the 8 cm diameter objective and the retractable eyepiece are fixed in brass rings at opposite ends of the tube. The telescope was of compact size and offered quick disassembly, making it a convenient portable instrument. It was brought to the Astronomical Observatory in Kraków in 1834 by Józef Łęski.

This huge sculpture stands in the middle of Bordeaux (France). When I walked by, I was stunned by this “half flat” sculpture, and shot it with my phone. I was realy impressed by the very realistic rendering, although most of the volume has been flattened.
Another feature worth noting : its proportions take into account the fact that the viewer is on the ground, so that the upper part of the head is much larger than it should be , to compensate for the perspective. This is a technique that has been know for a long time, (used by Michelangelo), but it’s interesting to see how it applies here.
