For this school assignment, the theme was “pirate ship”; the teacher wanted us to learn how to use 2 materials for 1 object. As I am a fan of more organic designs and mythology in general, I went with a stylized viking boat. For the shapes and the style, I was inspired by a game franchise that is dear to me: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. As for the textures, I tried to replicate a hand-painting feeling using masks and filters within Substance Painter. This project was suprisingly very fun to do! The Skuldelev ships are a group of five well preserved 11th century ships from the Viking period, found in the Roskilde Fjord in Denmark near the town of Skuldelev. Skuldelev 1 was a large ocean going ship, a trading vessel probably known as a Knarr. From analyzing the wood of the ship archaeologists were able to determine the ship had been built on the west coast of Norway around the 1030’s CE, and so ended it’s life far from where it was built. At some point in its life it had suffered massive damage which left it with a warped keel, and which necessitated significant reconstruction of the hull. This digital recreation is based on the ‘Ottar’, a full scale reconstruction made by the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum. The provision of a tent over the hold is hypothetical.

What happened to the viking?
A little 3D story made for the WeeklyCGChallenge #102 “Viking Age”. I’m really happy with how this turned out.
Almost everything was done with Blender, but I also used PixPlant to get the map textures. It’s a great tool, easy to use, and easy to get great results for the Specular material workflow!
