Le Condor des Andes, Vultur gryphus (Linné, 1758), rapace charognard, est le plus grand oiseau terrestre de l’hémisphère ouest. Ce spécimen mâle, a été collecté en Patagonie, en 1831, par Alcide Dessalines d’Orbigny (1802-1857). Aujourd’hui ce condor est conservé au Muséum d’histoire naturelle de La Rochelle, ville où le naturaliste vécut son enfance.
