This is a model of an 18th Century English hanger sword that I made originally using RealityCapture. I’ve returned to my original model, retopologized it, reworked the textures, and cleaned it up in some spots that needed manual attention. I’m quite happy with the result, and look forward to incorporating retopology in to my workflow more frequently. The blade is in excellent condition, and the hilt is a finely crafted work of silver. Both maintain an almost mirrored finish, presenting an enormous challenge to capture through photogrammetry. The initial model turned out okay considering the conditions, but several parts of the model had issues with continuity of the normals due to the nature of the more random topology of the model RealityCapture produced. This results in razor edges looking rough and jagged, as well as the smooth mirrored surfaces appearing lumpy and unfinished. My submission for a past Sketchwars theme: redo a classic… My thought is that something went astray with the Thunderbird between 1963 and 1967. My 3D sketch is a proposal for a different aesthetic bridge between the lovely 1963 body style and the somewhat radical departure of 1967. This took 4 hours to do, completely done in 3D while immersed in VR using Gravity Sketch. I had 2D reference pictures in the scene, but all the ideation of the forms was done in 3D. This is a non-traditional medium (skipping 2D) so I did a bunch of tweaking with post process effects to give it a more grainy textured paper/punchy colors/rendered look … minus the dabs of white gouache for highlights!
