This Neoclassical Lion guards the front of the Baltimore Museum of Art along with its identical companion. Baltimore artist Charles Klutch (1871-1951) carved the sculptures from limestone similar to that used on the facade of the Museum in 1929. They were based on smaller plaster casts executed by Adolph A. Weinmen (American, 1870-1937). This 3D scan shows the main entrance to the Neoclassical Stadsfeestzaal, which was originally inaugurated as a banquet and exhibition hall in the early 20th century. If anything the building’s interior is even more glamorous than its exterior, and my grandmother has fond memories of the formal balls that used to take place here.
Since 1983 the building is classified as a protected monument. After a devastating fire in 2000 the building was beautifully renovated and is now used as a shopping center.
