This wooden ‘Green Man' carving came from the screen in Owston Abbey, Leicestershire, which was an Augustinian monastry. It was cut out during renovations in the 19th century. The ‘Green Man' has a long and interesting history as it appears in both non-Christian and Christian traditions. The Green Man has been associated with seasonal rebirth and renewal and as such transferred easily into Christian imagery. From inspiration my wife drew, I wanted to take a sketch she did and build it in 3d.
I’ve always been drawn to environment and prop modeling and sculpting, so this was a great learning process. I cycled through modeling about 5 or 6 different tables before I finally settled on the ones seen here.
