This manuscript is composed of four papyrus sheets, each with four pages of text (two on each side). The four sheets were put one on top of the other, folded and then stitched together. There are remains of sewing thread on some sheets.
The subject of the book is prognostications to be derived from involuntary movement (quivering or twitching) of various parts of the body. That such movements portended certain events was a popular belief which finds expression in both Greek and Latin classical literature. The various members of the body are taken one after the other, starting from the head downwards, and the omens associated with their movement are concisely enumerated. The tables in Roman times used to have one foot, although they had three, four or five legs, used as luxury furniture they could be made of stone, bronze or marble, the three-legged ones being the most common use (Mensa tripens). This figurative, whole-body sculpture depicts a Roman gladiator with an upraised arm. The pedestal bears the following inscription: Ave Caesar! Morituri, salutant [Long live Caesar! Those who are going to die greet you]. The gladiator is – judging by his props – most likely a retiarius [net-fighter]. He fought with a trident or harpoon made of tuna bones, a dagger, and a net that he threw at his opponent’s head.
