This sculpture of standing Buddha is located at swayambhunath temple in Kathmandu.
Built in 15th century, placed at the front side of the hill, on the old route to the stupa. The word “swayambhu” in saskrit means self-manifestation meaning it was not made by human hands, but instead is naturally arisen, or generated by nature so people here believe the whole hill rose itself including most of the sculptures inside. Abukuma cave was discovered while mining for limestones from the current Kamayama quarry in September 1969.
In 1973 the inner cavern was developed for tourism then was open to the general public.
The route for sightseeing is 600 m. Together with the route closed to the public, it has a total length of 3,300 m.
Though that number may change due to investigations in the future.
Abukuma cave is presumed to have its limestones crystallized approximately 80 million years ago (the latter cretaceous period).

It was taken expansion work to motor vehicles can go through in 1934(昭和9年). In 1966(昭和41年), an another tunnel was opened at new place to they can go through if it has heavy snow and Banseitairo Road became the “Abandoned road” after finished its role.
