3D scan of a mounted skin of a snow leopard (Uncia uncia), one of the most threatened big cats on earth. Thanks to successful breeding programs, they can frequently be seen in zoos, but they are rarer in museums. This female snow leopard died in the Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna in 1943 and was mounted at the NHM Vienna.
The snow leopard is Number 95 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 38 of the NHM Vienna.

3D scan of a mount of a shoebill (Balaeniceps rex), that can stand up to 1.2 meters. Its name refers to the enormous beak that resembles a shoe. In Southern Sudan B. rex inhabits swamps and lakeshores where papyrus and reeds grow. This material is used to build their nests. This specimen of the rare African bird comes from the Bahr el Ghazal estuary in Sudan and was donated to the NHM Vienna in 1913.
The Shoebill is Number 76 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 30 of the NHM Vienna.

Cooperation with our friends at G-3D-PrintThe front cover of the jetski was scanned using Artec Leo in 15 minutes (including chalc sraying, markers, etc.) and the post-process workflow took about 60 minutes in Artec Studio. The jetski belongs to the world champion György Kasza and his team. The purpose of the scan is to make a perfect fit bespoke fabricated composite cover, therefore some reverse engineering was necessary to get a native CAD data (step) to be able to machine the mold for the composite. For this, weve sed Quicksurface’s Autosurface option to get the nurbs surface based on the HQ mesh. 3D scan of a Terror-bird model from the species Paraphysornis brasiliensis. Members of the Phorusrhacidae family are commonly known under the term “Terror-birds”. Species of these apex predators could reach a height up to 3 meters! They lived mainly in South America from the early Tertiary (55 million years ago) until the late glacial period.
This model can be found in Hall 9 at the NHM Vienna.

3D scan of the mounted white-tailed eagle pair (Haliaeetus albicilla) from the Danube wetlands near Vienna. These birds were bagged by Crown Prince Rudolf on the 22nd of January 1889, only nine days before he committed suicide in Mayerling, Austria. The nest of the white-tailed eagles called eyrie can be as tall as four meters and is often used for many years.
The white-tailed eagle pair with a fledgling at the center is Number 74 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 29 of the NHM Vienna.

There is no complete dodo skeleton left, nevertheless the NHM Vienna owns one of the most complete skeletons. Dodos lived exclusively on the islands of Mauritius and Reunion. The last dodo probably went extinct about 1690.
The dodo is Number 80 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 31 of the NHM Vienna.

3D scan of a trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator), which is the largest native water bird in Northern America and has been widespread there. These birds are around 1.5 meters long, with a wingspan of more than 2 meters. Trumpeter swans got their vernacular name due to their trumpet-like calls. This also reflects the scientific species name derived from “buccinare” – to trumpet.
The exhibited specimen originates from the Tiergarten Nürnberg and came to the NHM Vienna in 1978.
This trumpeter swan can be found in Hall 30 of the Natural History Museum Vienna.

3D scan of a black swan (Cygnus atratus), a large bird which is native to Australia and Tasmania. Fully grown black swans can be up to about 1.40 meters long and weigh up to 9 kilograms.
In Austria the black swan is an alien species which breeds irregularly elsewhere. In Vienna a breeding population with up to 170 individuals became extinct in the late nineties.
The exhibited specimen has been donated to the NHM Vienna in 1921 by the “Tiergarten Schönbrunn”.
This black swan can be found in Hall 30 of the Natural History Museum Vienna.
