In the late 3rd century, a complete break in Roman helmet design occurred. Previous Roman helmet types, based ultimately on Celtic designs, were replaced by new forms derived from helmets developed in the Sassanid Empire. A closely related form to the Roman ridge helmets is represented by a single helmet from Dura Europos which is of similar construction, but has a much higher-vaulted skull. It probably belonged to a Sassanid warrior of the 3rd century. This reinforces the evidence for a Sassanid origin of this type of helmet. Two main forms of helmet construction were adopted by the Romans at much the same time: the ridge helmet, described here, and the Spangenhelm, which was likely adopted from the Sarmatians. The earliest confirmed example of a Late Roman ridge helmet is the Richborough helmet, which dates to about 280 AD

During the construction of a new riverside wall in 1962 in London, the remains of an interesting ship were found. Dating evidence from the timbers and a coin found in the mast step placed the ship as likely being built, and sunk, during the Roman period, specifically in the 2nd Century CE. However, the ship was constructed in the Celtic tradition.
The reconstruction is based primarily on the excavation report by Peter Marsden published by English Heritage, “Ships of the Port of London – First to eleventh Centuries AD”. It contained detailed drawings of the remains and reconstruction drawings. Where no evidence remained, such as for the sails and the rear of the ship, Roman period iconography and other Roman period shipwrecks from northern Europe were used as inspiration. The sail plan is based of the Torlonia relief, and the nearly intact mast of a Roman period ship found in Bruges, Belgium. I had the privilege to work with the super chill and talented teammate, Gabriel Eekenulv, Skyblivion’s Concept Art Lead. Together we produced this grand and regal set of armor. As a historical arms and armor enthusiast, I often time find it difficult to work with many fantasy concept arts. Most designs sacrifice basic understanding and practicality for “cool” aesthetics which make no sense. When I came across Eekenulv’s armor designs, however, I was in awe. His designs are grand, elegant, and “cool”, yet they maintain insights and functionality of armors, a perfect balance between “Realism” and “Suspension of Disbelieve”.
This was one of the most fun project I’ve produced in collaboration with others. Not to mention my Twitch subscribers who took part in submitting poleaxe designs, which eventually developed into the one you see. This is a recent project of mine, an attempt to take some old pre-college concept drawings and make something out of them. Ultimately it was an excuse to freehand paint a lot of filigree detail in a couple different styles (one style for the steel parts, another for the wood/pommel). Painting filigree is incredibly satisfying! All the geometry and baking was done in Blender, and the first pass of materials also, then I moved over to Substance Painter for the detailing.
As for the sword itself, the profile is based on a German Landsknecht zweihänder, but with an even longer grip, taking it almost into the polearm realm. It would be used similarly, with continuous sweeping and spinning to take best advantage of its size, but can be used almost like a pike if the wielder was up against a single opponent, or a mounted enemy 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 7156 polygons.
