A model of Caesarean legionnary, those commanded by Julius Caesar during his gaulish war… And the final stage of the evolution of legionnaires before the breastplates as we imagine them today.
Theses equipments were in use approximately from the reforms of Marius in 107 BC -> to the beginning of the Principate around 27 AD.
After the dissolution of ranks in the army (Hastati, Velites, Principes, Triarii) and the opening of recruitment to larger social classes along with the provision of equipment at the Consul’s expense… All of this led to an overall standardization within the ranks of the roman army.
The main goal was to create an army without class distinction, where 5000 soldiers would be more or less equal to each other.
