Second university project, to create a floating island diorama
Went for all assets having relatively low pollys to have a fuller, busy impression.
My aim is to create a story by portraying a witch’s island of books, with her oragami birds and fish, aswell as her dragon Familiar. I tried to make most of the pages unique and included references to the dragon on a few of the books.
Not too sure about the colouring, was intending to have far more pinks and turquoises to aid a magical feel but ended up rather brown.
Willow trees are my favourite so went for a magical pink fantasy one.
Struggled a lot with the composition of the island and in hind sight would like to move everything around, but overall semi-happy.
First time using bump and emmision maps,

Hi!
This is the first version that I made of a giant floating rock for a VR project by La Frontera VR studio.
I modelled the basic shapes in Modo, sculpted the rocks in Zbrush and made the textures using Substance Painter.

Made this floating island with a lighthouse in 5 days trying to be done by the end of the week. And I gotta say, this was a marathon. Were a lot of troubles with baking, making fine details. If I had more time I would probably did separate bakes, but not this time. So, about the model: it’s a handpainted lowpoly with baked map from a highpoly. Triangles count: 27,5K. I was going with anime style (Miyazaki movies) and for reference I used artworks of Jim Shore (“Benatrex - Shorelights”), you’ll notice the lighthouse that I recreated.

This model is a concept made to represent a space filled with water that one can relax in. This first year project was to design a stereotomic form and it’s ground keeping in mind material, human experience, as well as atmosphere. I chose to incorporate water in my model and hence designed a form that is submerged within another form full of water. I then decided to continue the pattern of nesting into my ground as well. I chose to use glass in order to create an invisible feel that lets people feel as if they are floating in space. As a person moves up, the ground space is lesser, signifying increasing solitude and focus due to lesser interaction with the outside world. All these elements combined guarantee a more focused, deliberate human experience in the space. A simple stylized fantasy tree. I really like how it turned out! In the future, I think I’ll join the leaves on the tree to the actual tree model, and potentially fill it in more than I have. I tried to stick to simple colours, and give it a bit more texture than just being flat, while still keeping the look. I’ve always been a sucker for glowing mushrooms. Or glowing anything.
