A 14th century farmer using a heavy plough pulled by oxen. I was approached by BuildersBrew to create a small diorama of a Medieval Farmer ploughing the fields, this was based off of some references provided and is to be used within the immersive mobile app for The Chester House Estate. Conservation with the overall tricount, texture space and alpha usage in the project was important to make sure the model could load well in the application, the texture for the character was 4k for this render however this was reduced to 2k in the application and the overall tricount came in at around 70k for the whole project. The Skuldelev ships are a group of five well preserved 11th century ships from the Viking period, found in the Roskilde Fjord in Denmark near the town of Skuldelev. Skuldelev 2 was a large ocean going longship, a war vessel probably known as a Skeid - the type of vessel also known in the sagas as “dragon ships”. From analyzing the wood of the ship archaeologists were able to determine the ship had been built in Ireland around the 1040’s CE, the furthest away of all the Skuldelev ships. This digital recreation is based on the ‘The Sea Stallion from Glendalough’, a full scale reconstruction made by the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum. In search for inspiration I went down to my basement (well, it’s COVID time, I don’t have too much options :D) and well, I found one - a 1870s Singer sewing machine. It’s broken, almost every elements in it refuses to work properly and it got eaten by corrosion, but it’s still beautiful and become the main reference for this project, although ornaments I’ve designed looks as later, kinda art deco style. Manufactured by absolutely fictional Willoughsby Manufacturing Comapny. This beautiful font used in Willoughsby Manufacturing Company logo is Grenadier NF by Nick Curtis. This stone tool was found in ploughsoil in Kent, England. Quartzite pebble hammers with cental hourglass perforations date from the Mesolithic (c.8000-4000 cal BC). The perforation on this example was made by pecking and was subsequently ground smooth. A wooden handle woud have been inserted through the hole and that was probably bound in position. Small pecked facets on the leading edges indicate that this tool was used as a hammer; it may also have functioned as a weight on a digging stick. 72.8mm long, 50.3mm wide by 20.2mm thick.
