Small environment model based on a wonderful illustration by Marcel Hampel (https://bit.ly/2ATepdS). With this study I had one major goal - examine how base color works with light while trying to stay to the color scheme of the original illustration as close as possible. In order to do this I found myself referring to the birch a lot - its white color helped me figure out light and shadow hue and value relation between all the elements of the illustration. I didn’t use textures (except for the alpha cards for the grass and moss) so I could change colors quickly. I also learned some new tricks, like using Data Transfer modifier in Blender in order to adjust normals of the moss grass to the moss itself so it would blend perfectly (more obvious in the Matcap view). In order for both sides to look good, I duplicated the mesh and flipped normals, while making them both single sided. Today i’m glad to show you the last project I worked on this month of February with some Friends. Why ? Cause no, it’s not a piece I plan whatever to sell, but It was about making a quick overview of a futur real project. It was about an Archaeopark on the coast of the french riviera :) The project is expected to include several building like a Noreia (ship covered structure) a Palestre (Gymnase), A villa, some Houses, a Bouleuterion and small Culte Area. As you maybe know, the region was largely colonize by people from ancient Greece, who founded either counters or strongholds like Marseille (Massalia) - Hyères (Olbia) - Agde (Agathé Tyché) - Antibes (Antipolis), Nice (Nicaia) through the coast. So it could be cool to see theses reconstructed one day ! Of course for the moment, I insist, this is just a first preview of what this could be. This project feels like the reimaging of two separate projects I’ve done in the past. Mountain top castle, and lighthouse island. Both projects that at the time I was pleased with, but looking back on I felt weren’t my best. I liked their premises a lot so I went ahead and merged the two together. Thus Castle Island was born! Now for this scene, I did something I don’t often do when It comes to modelling scenes. I purchased pre-existing work. I know! Crazy, but I was having a strange amount of trouble modelling grass, I couldn’t get anything that looked “grass” you know? I found an awesome little collection pack of low poly natural and organic models. Something I do tend to struggle with making so I was in awe that I found something that fit my style and could be a great leg up in terms of things I struggle with. Definitely going to see if I can leverage these assets in the future. Super telephoto photogrammetry of a wreck abandoned boat derelict. Pealing chipping off layers of paint. Lots of seaweed and seashells from the lagoon of Venice. Unfortunately I could’t get full coverage because I coun’t get very close to the subject, maybe 20m the closest, I could’t get all the photos I wanted especially from the top. This was one of times I wish I had a drone (not sure if it’s even allowed to fly in that area anyway), so I tried my best with a 400mm lens handheld from any place I could walk around it. I managed anyway to get comfortably 3x8K textures and normals in a relatively low poly model. This was created as part of Ashleigh Warners’ ‘Creating Stylized Game Assets’ course available through CGMA. I completed my first draft last November, but I went back over it and made as many changes as possible to get it to a place I felt confident in sharing. This is MEEPO, or the Mega Express Espresso Processing Operator 3000. The initial idea was to have this retro-futuristic coffee-station diorama that sold a particular kind of mundane story (even if it was in a sort of space-setting). Either way, this is my first fully-completed hand-painted project and I couldn’t be happier! It was created through a mix of Blender, 3Ds Max, 3D Coat, Substance Painter and Photoshop!
