On January 18th 1935, Clark Hopkins, the field director at Dura-Europos, found three painted shields stacked on top of each other during an excavation. The shields, which date back to shortly before AD 256 and which were abandoned when Dura-Europos was sacked by the Sassanians, were in good condition with much of the painting still visible.
The ancient shield has been beautifully restored in digital 3D using available data from the Yale University Art Gallery and Herbert J. Gute’s watercolor painting, “Wooden Shield Painted with Scenes from the Trojan War”. The Light Amphibious Assault Warship (LAAWS), also known as the Guadalcanal Class, is the primary ship-to-shore connector for the US Navy. Its purpose is to transport US Marines and their equipment to islands alongside larger helicopter assault ships and landing docks.
There are two variants of the LAAWS: Block I and Block II, measuring 160m and 190m in length, respectively. Block I can accommodate 100 Marines and their equipment for up to 6 weeks at sea. Block II features a hangar for launching and recovering helicopters, UAVs, and USVs. It is also equipped with double the number of Vertical Launch System (VLS) cells.
The LAAWS is heavily armed, with 32 or 64 Mk41 VLS cells, 2x 57mm cannons, 12x mounts for M2 heavy machine guns, one or two SeaRAM CIWS systems, and 4x Harpoon anti-shipping missiles. Designed to blend in with commercial ships, the LAAWS operates in littoral waters, striking targets on both land and sea.
