The Light Amphibious Assault Warship (LAAWS), also known as the Guadalcanal Class, is the primary ship-to-shore connector for the US Navy. Its purpose is to transport US Marines and their equipment to islands alongside larger helicopter assault ships and landing docks.
There are two variants of the LAAWS: Block I and Block II, measuring 160m and 190m in length, respectively. Block I can accommodate 100 Marines and their equipment for up to 6 weeks at sea. Block II features a hangar for launching and recovering helicopters, UAVs, and USVs. It is also equipped with double the number of Vertical Launch System (VLS) cells.
The LAAWS is heavily armed, with 32 or 64 Mk41 VLS cells, 2x 57mm cannons, 12x mounts for M2 heavy machine guns, one or two SeaRAM CIWS systems, and 4x Harpoon anti-shipping missiles. Designed to blend in with commercial ships, the LAAWS operates in littoral waters, striking targets on both land and sea.

The Light Amphibious Assault Warship is the US navy litoral transport, design to transport up to 3x60 tons tanks to shore, LAAW is large enough to land a medium helicopter; can be fitted with additional containerized weapons in place of is transport cargo. The LAAW has several advanced naval design features. The entire crew cabin can be retracted below the ships hull reducing the radar and target profile of the LAAW, its mast can also be retraced to lower its overall height allowing it to sail under low bridges and narrow sea lanes. The ship is armed with four remote weapons stations that can mount various light and medium caliber cannons. The LAAW is also equipped with the AN/SLQ-59 Electronic warfare system which can jam radar guided anti-ship missiles and is highly effective, the ship also mounts the EOSS optical tracking system which can detect targets up to 4km away. Combined this gives the LAAW excellent situtation awareness in litoral waters.
