This structure is part of Launch Complex 26 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Brevard County, Florida. This historic complex has served two primary functions – as a launch facility and as a museum. The LC-26 site was associated with the Redstone research and development program and later the Jupiter program. Additionally, the first American satellite, Explorer I, was famously launched from LC-26 on January 31, 1958. The site was a dual-pad, single blockhouse complex constructed in 1957, and was also used for several launch missions involving primates that preceded human space exploration missions. The complex is a significant cultural resource listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Currently on museum display at the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine, Florida, this piece originally was located above the ravelin structure - a smaller fortification that provided a first line of defense at the entrance of the fort. This Coat of Arms was removed in 1957 to conserve the piece, and has been on display allowing visitors to the National Park to see it up-close. Today, a replica has been placed where the original Coat of Arms was found. As part of our comprehensive 3D survey, we used structured light scanning and imaging to document both the replica and the original piece. Our data is being used for digital archival preservation, conservation, additional replica creation, and for 3D modeling and public engagement. Our Sketchfab design uses an historic image of the ravelin structure from 1895, showing the Coat of Arms as it was, before its removal.
