This cope forms part of a High Mass set that would be used on special occasions. The gold and silver embroidery is particularly outstanding in this example and has been worked over card to achieve a raised effect. The set was gifted to the museum by St Mary’s Cathedral, Aberdeen and dates from 1860 – 1870 which was the period when St Mary’s became the Cathedral. Cairn Liath is an Iron Age broch that sits proudly on a rocky knoll and commands views over a long stretch of coastline. Broch’s are substantial stone towers or roundhouses only found in the far north of Scotland. They were constructed and used between 600 BC and 100 AD.
This broch has a circular interior 10.2m in diameter and substantial walls over 5m thick; there was one entrance passage to the building. The walls survive to 3.66m high, but originally the building would have stood to a considerably height and had higher floors. A staircase to higher levels was built into the wall.
The third Duke of Sutherland ‘cleared’ this broch in 1868 and some of his finds from his antiquarian excavations are preserved in the National Museum of Scotland. A finely decorated silver-gilt casket, made in Paris around 1490-1510, and believed to have been owned by Mary, Queen of Scots. It is an extremely rare example of French silver from the Renaissance era because much was melted down for their precious metals. Its survival attests to its association with Mary, and it has been treasured as a relic of this unfortunate queen by the Dukes of Hamilton for over 340 years.
Its particular renown derives from the belief that it is the casket that was dramatically produced at a hearing against Mary at Westminster in 1568, containing the notorious ‘Casket Letters’, used as evidence of the queen’s complicity in the murder of her husband Henry, Lord Darnley.

Even though it was the advent of guns, in this era, the sword was still the major side weapon of most anyone with a reason to stay alive. This sword is a broadsword, which at the time became more and more rare. They can still be seen as the famous Scottish basket-hilt swords or the German Katzbalger often used by the Landsknechts. This Dutch sword however is very minimal in terms of a basket, even in decorations it’s not exessively lavish, of which can conclude this sword was likely owned by a common soldier or burgher.
