A finely decorated silver-gilt casket, made in Paris around 1490-1510, and believed to have been owned by Mary, Queen of Scots. It is an extremely rare example of French silver from the Renaissance era because much was melted down for their precious metals. Its survival attests to its association with Mary, and it has been treasured as a relic of this unfortunate queen by the Dukes of Hamilton for over 340 years. Its particular renown derives from the belief that it is the casket that was dramatically produced at a hearing against Mary at Westminster in 1568, containing the notorious ‘Casket Letters’, used as evidence of the queen's complicity in the murder of her husband Henry, Lord Darnley. Ive been fascinated by classic touring and DTM racecars. They were extreme adaptaions from the original road cars with all the crazy areodynamics and other trimmings. BMW was my personal favourite with thier racecars having the biggest body kits and loudest engines. However, BMW focused on using the 3 series for most of its racing series but, what if they raced with a big grand tourer with a massive v12? This cross, remarkably preserved, is part of an important series so-called typological crosses. It is adorned with champleve emulsion prefiguring the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross: the offering of Cain and Abel, Aaron inscribing on the front of the Israelites the tau sign (formal prefiguration of the cross), the brazen serpent, the inscription of the sign tau at the gate of houses. The typological symbolism consists of going to search in the Old Testament of prophetic events announcing major episodes
Gospels. This theological process was a source of inspiration constant for Mosan artists.
