This 3D data of Kokura Castle was made using photogrammetry. This is Avatta’s first attempt in using drones to make high quality 3D architectural scan. We have photographed over 1500 images from all directions and the data was processed using Agisoft Photoscan.
Kokura Castle of Kitakyushu, Japan was built by Hosokawa Tadaoki in 1602. It was the property of the Ogasawara clan (from Harima) between 1632 and 1860. The castle was burnt down in 1866 in the war between the Kokura and Chōshū clans.
Mori Ogai was based at the castle at the turn of the 19th-20th century when it was a military base.
The keep was reconstructed in 1959, and the castle was fully restored in 1990. The Matsumoto Seicho museum and castle garden were opened in 1998. Quite possibly my longest project. So long, in fact, that I had to squeeze two projects in between to rest my eyes. But the concept is so good that I wanted to do it justice and recreate it as faithfully as I could. The most challenging bit was the grass and I was scratching my head trying to figure out how to render it. In the end I used partially transparent planes with painted texture. It isn’t best suited for 3D inspection, the illusion quickly falls appart, but I learned a new technique that will help me in future projects.

This work is based on a Sketchup-file. Unfortunately I don´t remember the name of its author. Anyway, thanks for the great model! Several years ago I converted and repaired it into a watertight STL-file.
My purpose is to provide watertight STL-files for you, which can easily be modified for 3D-printing, according to your personal preferences. Because of that, most of my models are not repaired into one single shell. According to my own experience, this may be a bit more difficult for the preparation of the build, but helps you a lot, if you want to personalize the model. E.g. if you want to seperate parts, such as wheels or mirrors or to remove delicate details like wipers, door handles etc.
Before printing, please check out if you have to modify the model, depending on the favored size of your print and the requirements of your printer. I hope you enjoy it. Happy printing!
