First time properly using Substance Painter - Croix De Guerre 1939, given to brave souls who fought along side the allies during WW2.
Some areas aren’t as accurate as I’d like them to be due to having to work around an issue in photoshop (had to mess about with the UV a little, so there’s a tiny bit of weirdness). That said, this has been an important breakthrough in my workflow and I’ve finally entered the realm of PBR.
Whilst I do own (and quite like) Quixel, its shortcomings are mostly performance based, whereas Substance does very well in this case. The thing with Substance is pinpoint accuracy is at a loss along with important things like proper brush scaling on both U and V. I’ve yet to check out the latest version of Substance though. I had the privilege to work with the super chill and talented teammate, Gabriel Eekenulv, Skyblivion’s Concept Art Lead. Together we produced this grand and regal set of armor. As a historical arms and armor enthusiast, I often time find it difficult to work with many fantasy concept arts. Most designs sacrifice basic understanding and practicality for “cool” aesthetics which make no sense. When I came across Eekenulv’s armor designs, however, I was in awe. His designs are grand, elegant, and “cool”, yet they maintain insights and functionality of armors, a perfect balance between “Realism” and “Suspension of Disbelieve”.
This was one of the most fun project I’ve produced in collaboration with others. Not to mention my Twitch subscribers who took part in submitting poleaxe designs, which eventually developed into the one you see.
