A mechanical mid poly model of a pigeon that I made based on a sculpture by Igor Verny. In this work, I paid attention to creating a high-quality topology with the correct edge flow. The model has two modes of use: 1. Mid Poly - 26k triangles [all chamfers are made using bevel, not a normal map]; 2. Subdivision - the same model, but using the Subdivision Surface modifier [in this case, the model will become highly polygonal, about 410k triangles] Resolution of pigeon textures: 4k. This is a model of an 18th Century English hanger sword that I made originally using RealityCapture. I’ve returned to my original model, retopologized it, reworked the textures, and cleaned it up in some spots that needed manual attention. I’m quite happy with the result, and look forward to incorporating retopology in to my workflow more frequently.
The blade is in excellent condition, and the hilt is a finely crafted work of silver. Both maintain an almost mirrored finish, presenting an enormous challenge to capture through photogrammetry. The initial model turned out okay considering the conditions, but several parts of the model had issues with continuity of the normals due to the nature of the more random topology of the model RealityCapture produced. This results in razor edges looking rough and jagged, as well as the smooth mirrored surfaces appearing lumpy and unfinished.
