A mitre is a bishop or abbot’s distinctive ceremonial head-dress. This mitre is hand embroidered and is set with semi-precious and non-precious stones. This mitre came from St James Abbey, Ratisbon (now Regensburg), Germany.
After the abbey closed, the mitre went with the last of the Scottish monks to the new abbey they founded at Fort Augustus in 1862. This building is located in Tbilisi at the top of the Digomi Hills. It used to be a water tank, but in the late 1980s the tank was remodeled and there were plans to open an archaeology museum in it. Unfortunately, the museum was never opened. The building has stood empty and semi-abandoned ever since.
