L'hôtel du Lac est un ancien hôtel de style brutaliste construit entre 1970 et 1973 selon les plans de l'architecte italien Raffaele Contigiani. Selon la CNN, l’hôtel du lac, a fortement impressionné le créateur de Sars Wars, dont une large partie du tournage a été faite en Tunisie. L'influence de l'Hôtel du Lac à Tunis, en forme de pyramide renversée, se verra plus tard dans le véhicule fictif Sandcrawler utilisé par les Jawas de la planète désertique Tatooine dans le film. L’édifice en pleine période glamour accueillit plusieurs célébrités tel que James Brown. Mais les bons moments se sont estompés. L'hôtel a fermé ses portes en 2000 et s’apprête à être démoli, de même les travaux de démolition semblent être imminents. L'architecte et militant Sami Aloulou ne cesse pas de lancer des cris d'alarme pour sauver un hôtel souverain batit pour se rebelle contre les formes architecturales traditionnelles et coloniales. The Berengaria Hotel opened its doors in 1931 and closed down in 1984. It now stands desolate, derelict and its stone structure is beginning to crumble. During its time, it was the hidden jewel of the mountains as it was a luxurious hotel hosting visitors such as Pharouk, the King of Egypt and Ezer Vaisman president of Israel as well as top businessmen of the time. It was a mountain resort with a casino, night club and had state of the art furniture and decor.
What makes the Berebgaria Hotel appealing is its peculiar hostory. The hotel closed down due to bad business and huge profit loss but underlying stories uncover secrets within the family. It was said that the original owner, after having built a hotel himself with an international presence and reputation, left the hotel to his three sons.
