This head of a ram is a decorative section of a much larger (approx. two metres tall) vase on display at The Louvre, Paris. The vase was part of a pair, which is now missing, was commissioned by the general director of the buildings of King Philibert Orry in 1742 to decorate the park of the Chateau of Choisy (which were actually never placed there). The painting is a tronie of a girl wearing an exotic dress, an oriental turban, and an improbably large pearl earring. It has been in the collection of the Mauritshuis in The Hague since 1902.
Being faithful to the original painting while pushing depth beyond the 2D realm, I am interested to bring her to life, as if she is reading the audience’s reaction, wanting to comment but too shy to speak.
