En effet, la Vénus d’Arles a été offerte en 1683 par les Arlésiens au roi louis XIV sur sa demande pour décorer la galerie des Glaces du château de Versailles. À l’origine, la sculpture en marbre plus grande que nature, aujourd’hui conservée au musée du Louvre, décorait sans doute une des niches du mur de scène du théâtre romain où elle accompagnait la statue colossale d’Auguste. Une hypothèse récente suggère qu’elle devait être exposée aux côtés de l’empereur en tant que Vénus Victrix ou Vénus armée victorieuse.
