Guanyin is an East Asian bodhisattva associated with compassion as venerated by Mahayana Buddhists. She is commonly known as the “Goddess of Mercy" in English. The name Guanyin is short for Guanshiyin, meaning “[The One Who] Perceives the Sounds of the World". She is also referred to as Guanyin Bodhisattva. Some Buddhists believe that when one of their adherents departs from this world, they are placed by Guanyin in the heart of a lotus, and then sent to the western pure land of Sukhāvatī. Guanyin is often referred to as the “most widely beloved Buddhist Divinity"with miraculous powers to assist all those who pray to her as listed in the Lotus Sutra and Karandavyuha Sutra. Several of the biggest temples in East Asia are dedicated to Guanyin including Shitennoji, Sensoji, Kiyomizu-dera and Sanjusangendo as well as Shaolin. 豐田神社大正四年（1915）鎮座，屬無格社，為豐田移民村的日人在臺灣安身立命的信仰倚靠。戰後神社被改建為碧莲寺，目前尚存鳥居、狛犬及石燈籠等遺跡。此對狛犬位於寺前，身驅刻有渦漩紋，台座處有「野口佐次郎 小松口太郎奉納 昭和二年十月二十五日」款。在造型上，匠師順著芯棒塑形，自後腦勺沿著背脊塑出一道優美的弧線，前端以筆直細長的前肢作為支應，未端則以豎立的尾鬃平衡了頭重腳輕的情況，在單純精簡中透出形的美感。如後肢不多作骨路肌肉的描寫，與服貼的鬃毛同匯融於渾暢簡潔的軀體；而前肢肘部僅以一横線劃分，即巧妙地打破視覺的單調冗長，卻又不至擾亂整體的協調，誠為一簡中寓繁的難得逸品。

This replica stands in the center of McKennan Park in Sioux Falls, SD.
It is a replacement for an older, folksy-looking wooden replica that was removed after vandalism in the 1960s. The wooden replica was in poor shape from exposure and seems to have been lost.
When the city decided to replace the replica, I supplied a copy of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi’s early study maquette to be used for modeling.
The replica was set atop the original pedestal previously occupied by the wooden replica.
I used my iPhone mounted on a painters pole with a bluetooth remote to snap photos of the upper parts of the replica. In total, I used 288 photos out of nearly 600 taken.
