A new version of this model has been uploaded with a more accurate texture. Surface scan of a Galapagos giant tortoise from the D’Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum at the University of Dundee. Chelonoidis nigra (originally catalogued as Testudo elephantopus) - Galapagos Giant Tortoise. Length = 82cm. Scanned with an Artec Eva surface scanner. The resulting file is exported as an obj. and imported into Zbrush. Texture is added from photographs using the Spotlight function and Polypainting. The western lantern tortoise is actually fairly well camouflaged during the whole year, except for the autumn months, when it has to actively look for as much food as possible to survive hibernation during the cold winter months. Forfeiting camouflage strategy, it uses bioluminescent cells in it’s skin and the thinner parts of it’s shell to scare away predators with a haunting, glowing face on it’s back that resembles a far larger creature. Because of it’s appearance, and it’s active behaviour during the halloween season, it’s often mistaken for a large pumpkin in the dark, hence it’s name.

Cooperation with our friends at G-3D-PrintThe front cover of the jetski was scanned using Artec Leo in 15 minutes (including chalc sraying, markers, etc.) and the post-process workflow took about 60 minutes in Artec Studio. The jetski belongs to the world champion György Kasza and his team. The purpose of the scan is to make a perfect fit bespoke fabricated composite cover, therefore some reverse engineering was necessary to get a native CAD data (step) to be able to machine the mold for the composite. For this, weve sed Quicksurface’s Autosurface option to get the nurbs surface based on the HQ mesh. 3D scan of a primeval dwarf horse (Eurohippus messelensis) fossil from Messel, which is todays Darmstadt, Germany. Fossils from this area are extraordinarily good preserved. That is because 47 million years ago there was a tropical forest around Lake Messel, and on its floor the oxygen-deprived environment prevented decomposition of the corpses that sunk into the lake.
This primeval dwarf horse of Messel is Number 28 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 9 in Showcase 68 at the NHM Vienna.

3D scan of a fossilized ammonite from the Lower Albian (Lower Cretaceous). The mother-of-pearl shell is still visible, which makes this piece special. This ammonite was found in Ambatolafia within the Mahajanga Basin in the northwest of Madagascar. Take a look at a 3D scan of a big block full of fossilized ammonites from the same location here.
This fossil cannot be found in the exhibition of the NHM Vienna. Some other beautiful specimens of this kind can be found in Hall 8 of the NHM Vienna.

Thanks to successful breeding programs, they can frequently be seen in zoos, but they are rarer in museums. This female snow leopard died in the Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna in 1943 and was mounted at the NHM Vienna.

3D scan of an Arrau turtle (Podocnemis expansa). This specimen is an example for early taxidermy. This turtle was caught in 1832 on the banks of the Rio Solimões during an Austrian expedition in Brazil. It came to the NHM Vienna in 1834 and is one of a few found specimens of this rare species. Arrau turtles live in the wetland areas of South America and are among the largest freshwater turtles in the world.
The Arrau turtle is Number 73 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 28 of the NHM Vienna.
