Artist unknown. Florentine, probably after a model by Andrea del Verrocchio and Orsino Benintendi, ca. 1513/1520. Polychrome terracota. National gallery of Art, Washington. Samuel H. Kress Collection. Lorenzo, known as the Magnificent, was the unofficial head of state in Florence from 1469 to 1492. After surviving an attack in 1478 at Florence Cathedral by conspirators (who assassinated his brother Giuliano), supporters commissioned life-size wax images of Lorenzo in churches in thanksgiving for his survival. Verrocchio reportedly supervised the wax specialist Orsino Benintendi in making those sculptures. This portrait, thought probably made later, may be based on the wax sculpture that was dressed in the clothes Lorenzo wore during the attack. George Washington had dentures made of many materials, including human teeth. In the 18th century, it was common practice for dentists to purchase teeth from poor people for use in dentures or tooth transplants. 1784, Washington purchased nine teeth from several “Negroes,” for 122 shillings, which is less than a third of the payment advertised to poor white Americans. They were likely enslaved people living at Mount Vernon.

As with the other two Artemisions of Asia Minor, the great Archaic/Hellenistic temple at Ephesus and Hermogenes’ Temple of Artemis Leucophryene at Magnesia-on-the-Meander, the principal facade of the temple was toward the west.
The area might have been sacred to Artemis from the earliest days onward as attested by a large Archaic altar of limestone blocks, located at the west end of the temple.
