If there is one essential monument in Vigo, that’s the monument to Jules Verne (42.241217, -8.722885). The great writer devoted a chapter to “The Bay of Vigo” in one of his most famous books, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, fuelling the legend of the Rande treasure with the adventures of its popular main character, Captain Nemo, and his famous Nautilus. Jules Verne even came to visit the city some time after writing the novel, so in his honour and on the centenary of his death (2005), the Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Pontevedra commissioned this bronze sculpture from local artist José Molares and donated it to the city. Since then, the writer has been sitting on the tentacles of a giant squid in the Avenidas, next to the Montero Ríos gardens. The castle sits within the Blaise Castle Estate, which also includes Blaise Castle House, a Grade II listed 18th-century mansion house. Alūksne Castle (Latvian: Marienburgas pils, Alūksnes pils; Swedish: Marienburg; German: Marienburg) is a castle of Teutonic Knights in current Alūksne, North-Eastern Latvia. The castle was built in 1342 on the largest of the islands in the Lake Alūksne and called Marienburg. The first castle was constructed by the Landmeister Burkhard von Dreileben. It was part of a major reinforcement of the Eastern border of Livonia. The strength of the castle was repeatedly proven by repelling a number of attacks in the 16th century. After the fall of the Old Livonia, the castle remained habitable. It was finally destroyed in 1702 in the Great Northern War by its Swedish garrison to avoid falling in the hands of Russians.
