I’ve always had an afinity for masks, so I decided i’d make one. I had no real idea what it would be like, so i collected lots of different mask references of many different types and styles. In the end i was heavily inspired by the Majora’s Mask short film and decided to go down a wooden tribal route. I started out in ZBrush and messed about with the design for a few days, eventually settling on what you see. I remeshed and exported that out to Max for a clean-up of some of the topology and to do the unwrapping (though i was lazy and didnt reduce the polys for most of it, ideally it would be lower poly but by the time my laziness on the matter had subsided I had already unwrapped it, so I decided to keep going) I then took it into Substance Painter, baked down my high poly details and textured. I had played with having glowing eyes but in the end I have decided it looks best without that. I added the symbols to the back as a hasty afterthought, and only now do I notice that they are off center! Like in the Mosquito in Amber, most of my attention was spent on normal maps, roughness and refraction settings to try to make this model as realistic as possible. I actually had to create a secondary internal surface for the bottle, and also relied on clear coat options for the glass material in order to try to give the model a feeling of thickness. To try to get the opacity right, I used refraction on the outer layer (normals offset checked), and alpha-blending on the inner one. All of the modeling was done with Blender, but the critical part for the model aesthetics relies on Sketchfab materials and post-processing.
