The design of the capstan is taken from “Mémoires d’artillerie” by Surirey de Saint Remy, the French “lieutenant du Grand-Maître d’artillerie de France” and adapted for technical inconsistencies. The image below shows the use of such a capstan in the fortress of Lillo in 1640 (the virtual reconstruction is documented in this blog - in Dutch)

A musket is a long gun that appeared in the 16th century and was the most used defensive weapon in a fortress such as Fort Lillo. The walls of a West European fortress were designed for musket fire. During the 17th century, muskets used matchlock ignition (gunpowder was ignited by a slow-burning piece of cord). Only around 1700, they are replaced by flintlock muskets.
