Sculpture of a Roman gladiator A 3D model of an eighteenth-century bronze sculpture created by Pius Weloński (1849–1931). This figurative, whole-body sculpture depicts a Roman gladiator with an upraised arm. The pedestal bears the following inscription: Ave Caesar! Morituri, salutant [Long live Caesar! Those who are going to die greet you]. The gladiator is – judging by his props – most likely a retiarius [net-fighter]. He fought with a trident or harpoon made of tuna bones, a dagger, and a net that he threw at his opponent’s head. Wearing a double-collared hanging cassock, the hem is covered with a lotus seat. Inside is a monk’s branch, and a silk belt is tied in front of the chest. The left hand caresses the knee, the right hand casts the Dharma seal, and sits on the lotus platform in knotted lotus. Under the lotus pedestal, there are Panlong columns, double-layer Xumizuo and square beds. The coiled dragon goes up around the column, holding up the lotus seat, and the column is embedded in the Xumi seat. There are two flame-style pot doors on each side of Xumizuo.
