Fire station no. 32 was constructed in 1907, after the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904. At 10:50am on February 7, 1904, a small fire in the business district rapidly spread throughout a large portion of the city by the evening. Consequently, Baltimore City erected dozens of new fire stations after this event. Baltimore artist Charles Klutch (1871-1951) carved the sculptures from limestone similar to that used on the facade of the Museum in 1929. They were based on smaller plaster casts executed by Adolph A. Weinmen (American, 1870-1937). Weinman used as his prototype an ancient Roman sculpture that originally stood outside the Villa Medici in Rome, but is now located at the famed Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence.
