A capstan was used to hoist a cannon up the slopes of the walls of a fortress. Typically, a 24 pound cannon weights 3000 kg and at least 4 men were needed to get the cannon up the slope. The design of the capstan is taken from “Mémoires d’artillerie" by Surirey de Saint Remy, the French “lieutenant du Grand-Maître d’artillerie de France” and adapted for technical inconsistencies. A cannon was made in such a way that it was nearly in balance around the wheel axis. This means that one man could lift a cannon and attach it to a horse-drawn front carriage to transport the cannon. As a 24-pound cannon weighs about 3000 kg, this works well on flat terrain. Getting the cannon up the walls was done with a capstan and a lot of man-power. A musket is a long gun that appeared in the 16th century and was the most used defensive weapon in a fortress such as Fort Lillo. The walls of a West European fortress were designed for musket fire. During the 17th century, muskets used matchlock ignition (gunpowder was ignited by a slow-burning piece of cord). Only around 1700, they are replaced by flintlock muskets. A bandolier contained a small poach for bullets, several wooden tubes with the right amount of gunpowder and a metal flask with ignition powder. A soldier using a musket was called a musketeer.

The harquebusier was the most common form of cavalry found throughout Western Europe during the early to mid-17th century. Early harquebusiers were characterised by the use of a type of carbine called a “harquebus”. In England, harquebusier was the technical name for this type of cavalry, though in everyday usage they were usually simply called ‘cavalry’ or ‘horse’. In Germany they were often termed Ringerpferd, or sometimes Reiter, in Sweden they were called lätta ryttare.
The armour comprises a Pot Helmet with two-piece skull joined by a low-comb, neck-guard (Lobster tail) of simulated lames and pointed peak or visor with three-bar guard hinged at each side to allow it to be raised when not needed. At each side are the cheek pieces for protection, hinged by means of leather strips.
