These arches once formed the base of a tomb or shrine in the early medieval church that is now part of Glasgow Cathedral. It may have been associated with the shrine of St Kentigern, the first bishop within the ancient British kingdom of Strathclyde, who died in 614. La catedral de León fue diseñada sin claustro, pero finalmente se levantó entre finales del siglo xiii y principios del siglo xiv. Esta construcción cubrió la entrada norte que, desde entonces, quedó resguardada. Este claustro tiene una planta cuadrada de 30 metros de lado, posee seis intercolumnios por lado y 24 pilares en total, respondiendo a las proporciones establecidas en los claustros cistercienses. A su alrededor se agrupan diversas dependencias, entre ellas, el actual Museo Catedralicio.
