In 1937, the Czechoslovak Army announced a competition for a new light tank to replace the LT 35. The Plzen Skoda has applied for participation in the competition and as its competitor — “ČKD". In the tests that took place in the spring of 1938, the tank — type identification TNHPS produced by “ČKD" won. The tank was created under the leadership of Russian engineer Alexei Surin, who found himself in Czechoslovakia after the October Revolution of 1917. Although Boeing lost the contract (to the Douglas B-18 Bolo) because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress become the third-most produced bomber of all time, behind the four-engined Consolidated B-24 Liberator and the multirole, twin-engined Junkers Ju 88.
