Gilt bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha preaching Tang and Five Dynasties Unearthed from the underground palace of Leifeng Pagoda in Hangzhou in 2001, it is 68 cm high. The Buddha statue has a high meat bun, spiral hair, slender eyebrows, ears hanging down the shoulders, and three silkworm patterns on the neck. Wearing a double-collared hanging cassock, the hem is covered with a lotus seat. Inside is a monk's branch, and a silk belt is tied in front of the chest. The left hand caresses the knee, the right hand casts the Dharma seal, and sits on the lotus platform in knotted lotus. Under the lotus pedestal, there are Panlong columns, double-layer Xumizuo and square beds. The coiled dragon goes up around the column, holding up the lotus seat, and the column is embedded in the Xumi seat. There are two flame-style pot doors on each side of Xumizuo. I had the privilege to work with the super chill and talented teammate, Gabriel Eekenulv, Skyblivion’s Concept Art Lead. Together we produced this grand and regal set of armor. As a historical arms and armor enthusiast, I often time find it difficult to work with many fantasy concept arts. Most designs sacrifice basic understanding and practicality for “cool” aesthetics which make no sense. When I came across Eekenulv’s armor designs, however, I was in awe. His designs are grand, elegant, and “cool”, yet they maintain insights and functionality of armors, a perfect balance between “Realism” and “Suspension of Disbelieve”.
This was one of the most fun project I’ve produced in collaboration with others. Not to mention my Twitch subscribers who took part in submitting poleaxe designs, which eventually developed into the one you see.
